Therapy 101

At Kantha and Reverie Wellness we see therapy is an excavation, a deconstruction, and reconstruction of your own self; a process of ultimately returning to self. The role of therapist in this process is marked by accompaniment to bear witness to client’s suffering and provide them scaffolding to facilitate healing and management of mental health.

Process

The first few sessions of therapy involves getting to know you as a holistic person apart from what brought you to therapy. We will ask questions about you and different areas of your life. During this time we will start to give you some information about mental health and how it might apply to your situation. The subsequent sessions then will focus on helping you to make connections, making sense of your experiences, and providing you with skills to manage distress. We might also give you some resources, activities, or skills to practice outside of our sessions. Informed consent for us is an ongoing process and we do our best to let you know about why we are doing what we are doing in therapy. Feedback to us is also important, you are allowed to ask us questions about the process, what you like and dislike about your therapy so that we can continue to accommodate your interest and needs.

Time-frame:

Depending on the level of your need and our availability we can see you starting with once a week to once every two weeks then to once a month.

Accessibility:

‘Talk therapy’ is not for everyone, if you would like to try out different ways of engaging based on your interest and accessibility needs we can incorporate them into the therapy session. For example, when talking about mindfulness we use art activities or filling out worksheets to discuss how anxiety surfaces.

Risk and Benefits:

Some benefits to therapy include improving your wellbeing, learning to manage mental health, more insight into self and others, and reduced distress. It can be uncomfortable talking about distressing thoughts, emotions, and experiences. We recommend being compassionate toward yourself as you navigate this process. Since your engagement is voluntary you are allowed to discontinue our services at any time.

We are available to answer any questions that you might have about starting therapy during our free phone consultation.
